DIABLO

As soon as I walked in the door, I sensed something was off. Avery's purse was sitting on the table in the hallway along with her sweater, as if she were about to go somewhere.

I went into the office to see her typing on the computer at lightning speed, then she stopped and looked up at me.

Her beautiful bottom lip was quivering, her eyes glassy. "Do you really want to tattoo me, brand me like I'm cattle on your ranch?" she asked.

Oh shit.

I rushed over to wrap her in my arms, but she held up a hand to stop me. "Baby, it's not like that. You'll see, when you—"

"When I what? Go to church at your clubhouse, where you claim me as your old lady in front of a bunch of people I don't even know?" Avery stood up, trembling slightly. "I think your leather vest looks sexy," she said, motioning to my cut. "But I never thought you’d be telling me what to wear."

Avery took a few steps around the other side of the desk, as if she were headed for the door. I had a dark feeling that I shouldn't let her leave.

"When were you going to tell me about all of this?" she asked. "You made me fall for you without giving me all the details. That's almost worse than lying."

"I was going to tell you tonight," I said gently, resisting the urge to lunge for her so I could hold her close.

"I know that you're shy, and I didn't want you to meet a giant group of people at once. I thought that in another day or two we could go by the clubhouse when it's quiet, and you could see what wonderful people they are."

"But it should be my choice to get tattooed and join a club!" she cried.

Part of me was impressed that she actually raised her voice to me. My adorable little pixie placed her hands on the desk to stop them from shaking. "Everyone has tried to control me. Mom wanted me to be a certain way. Aaron pushed me around then pushed me out. Now you just expect me to slot into your life like a missing puzzle piece?"

"Oh God, baby, no."

I slumped against the wall behind me, trying to make myself seem smaller and less intimidating. "I never meant for it to seem like that at all."

"Well it does." Avery hesitated. "I'm going to go for a drive to clear my head."

"Where are you going?" I asked quickly, unable to stop myself.

"I don't know." Her gaze fell to the empty mug on the desk. "Maybe I'll go to the grocery store to check out the herbal tea selection. I just need some space."

I followed her at a slight distance as she went to the door, then dug out my keys. "At least take my car."

Avery shook her head. "No. I don't drive a stick very well yet, and I need to be relaxed."

"Your phone is charged? You'll call me if you need anything at all?"

She rolled her eyes.
